Board Meeting Minutes: August 14, 2009

Time and Location: 7 P.M. , 1010 Old Plantation Road

Attendees: Ed Elser, Arthur Shealy, Will McGee, Mason Barrett

Absent: Pat Carpenter, Louvenia Matthews

Others Present: Nathan Loubough

Proceedings:

• 501c(3) registration has been acknowledged by the IRS

• Mason was asked to sign check card at bank

• Ed recommends making Pat Carpenter, Louvenia Miles and Terri as Ex-Officio board members

• Media Relations

  • Buzz on Biz – Ed was interviewed on the program, audio of the show is available on the SmartKids.SC website

  • Blog on website is configured to automatically forward to Twitter

  • All members with Facebook accounts are encouraged to mention SmartKids.SC on their page

• Membership

  • Nathan Loubaugh was voted as member of Board of Directors

• Science Olympiad was targeted for early 2010

  • City wide – propose 5 local elementary schools

  • Discussion was made concerning whether to host a single event for all schools, or to have separate events at each school. It was decided to hold event at each school that wants to participate.

• Writing Contest

  • 1 prize for 2^nd & 3^rd grades, 1 prize for 4^th & 5^th grades

  • Arthur reminded board that the goal of the writing contest is to increase public awareness of the organization in order to find additional donors

  • Target for first contest is before Thanksgiving with topic of Columbus day

  • Ed to complete forms required by school district’s area offices

  • After approval Nathan recommends following up with schools to remind staff and teachers

  • Possible topics from brainstorming session:

    • Columbus Day

    • Should alligators be allowed in Brick Pond Park

    • Should alligators be removed from Brick Pond Park

• Current bank balance is $90

• Ed presented recommendations from Terri

  • Find a parent willing to be a liason between board and each school

  • Work on developing a list of corporate sponsors

    • Such as, Wal-Mart and Chic-Fil-A

Future Business:

• Next meeting September 10^th, 7 P.M. at 1010 Old Plantation Road

• Officers will be elected at the September meeting
